Roulette history

Roulette is originally a French word that means "small wheel". It is understood that Roulette Wheel was invented like a perpetual motion machine in 1655 by a French scientist named Blaise Pascal. Blaise Pascal was known for his contributions in the development of ‘probability’. First of all, Roulette Wheel was used in a monastery to tackle the common problem of boredom. Within few years after this innovative application, it was used in a rudimentary casino of Paris. At the initial stage, it was regarded the game for intelligent and glamorous people.

In 1842, Luis Blanc and Francois established first casinos at Monte Carlo. It is said that a devil shared the secret of Roulette with them in exchange of their souls. After this development, they started to use 37 numbers (0 to 36), whose sum if added together comes up 666. The figure 666 has its own mythical value as it is known as the number of the beast. Though it is very difficult to prove various parts of associated myths but even then Roulette game has a great flavor of supernaturalism and simplicity.

It is said that first modern Roulette Wheel, containing different sections parted with colors bearing odd/even numbers was used in a Paris casino. After some years, in early 1800s, mega-popular Roulette became popular in US also. Initially, Roulette game became popular among the people who relied more upon their luck, patience and superstition etc instead of earning by working hard. Western miners of United States embraced the game and it gained new heights of popularity during historical Gold Rush period.

After some time, presence of single "0" on the Roulette wheel was rejected in US and altering the original design of Roulette wheel, 00 was added on the wheel to increase the profit edge of casinos. So, American Roulette wheel became casino friendly more rather than player. That’s why, players especially the newbie, are suggested to play with European wheel.

With the passage of time, the popularity of ‘single zero wheel’ almost eliminated the use of Double Zero wheels in Europe and single zero wheel became popular as "French Wheel." Now, almost every casino conducts Roulette game because Roulette is most popular gambling game because of its simplicity, unlimited suspense and big payoff like 35:1.
